TUTORIAL: What Is Strobing?

Strobing? But I only just got the hang of contouring!

Girl, I feel you. Just when it seems like everyone's mastered the contour, this new technique just strolls on in and becomes the new 'it' thing.

Well, in all honesty, I love it! Strobing is all about giving your complexion a gorgeous glow and emphasising the areas of the face that light would naturally hit - such as your cheekbones - to give your skin a healthy radiance. So while contouring is all about creating shadows, strobing is used to add light!

Plus (real talk), it takes waaaaay less time in the morning than contouring and I think the effect is much more wearable for everyday. So in this week's post, I'll be showing you how to get that dewy, strobed-up complexion, so you can leave your bronzers behind and get your highlighters ready!

First up, you're going to need a highlighter. I prefer to use powder highlighters like the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette below, but if you like using liquid or cream based ones, they will work too!

Strobing is best done when you've already applied your base makeup (primer, foundation and concealer), so start with that. To get that initial glowy and flawless skin effect, apply a warm-toned highlighting powder with a fluffy brush to your entire face to set your foundation.

P.S. If you use a liquid or cream highlighter instead of powder, try mixing a little of it into your foundation before you apply it to your skin instead.

Wow, such glow! Much highlight. Very strobe.

Next is the fun part! With a fluffy, rounded rectangular shaped brush, apply a shimmery, pearlescent highlighter to any areas of the face that light would naturally hit. Try your cheekbones, along the bridge of your nose, just above your top lip and just beneath your eyebrows. Don't be shy with how much you apply, I'm usually pretty generous with it!

And that's literally all there is to strobing! Gorgeous glowing skin with minimal effort? Heck to the yes.

  1. I think it is gorgeous. And I agree - way faster than highlighting and contouring. This is a must for every day! :)

  3. For me, I'll always be all about the highlighting! Cannot get enough of the stuff, and I love that Hourglass palette as well. Then again, a little contouring now and then to chizel my cheekbones never hurt right? haha
