REVIEW: Maybelline The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette

IT'S FINALLY HERE!

Pick your jaws up off the floor, because YES, the Maybelline New York The Nudes palette has arrived in Australia! And for the sake of beauty writer "research", I just had to pick it up so I could review it for you guys. #likeineededanexcuse #youarewelcome

This twelve-colour eyeshadow palette contains a combination of both matte and shimmery shades, from soft beiges to high shine metallics (heck yes!). It's a rarity for the drugstore, where usually you can only find eyeshadows in singles, duos or quads. To find an affordable palette with TWELVE shades is incredible, and it's no wonder the one that I bought was the only one left in my local Priceline.

There has been SO. MUCH. HYPE around this palette, and I can pretty much hear the hearts of Australian beauty lovers' hearts racing as I type this. So let's get on to the review!

Packaging

At first glance, this palette is pretty sleek. The plastic black casing is solid and it would easily slip into your makeup bag or purse. Each eyeshadow pan is also pretty generous, so I have a good feeling that this is going to last me a while!

I do have one small nitpick to make though: it comes with a sponge applicator (fairly normal for a drugstore palette, but pretty useless), but the slot it sits in is much bigger than the applicator so it jangles around all the time! Hopefully I can find an eyeshadow brush small enough to fit in the slot and I can use that instead.

Pigmentation

I've heard mixed reviews from our American friends about the performance of this palette, so I went in not expecting too much just in case. At first touch, the shadows felt very stiff on my fingertips, but once I applied the shades to my eyelids, I was pleasantly surprised by just how pigmented these shadows are.

Like every palette, there are some hit and miss shades (for example, I wish the dark grey and black shades were more vibrant), but a good nine out of the twelve are pretty damn great. Standout shades for me would have to be the bronze (fourth on the top row) and the chocolatey brown (fourth on the bottom row). Five of the eyeshadows are matte as well, so you get quite the bang for your buck!

Longevity & Wear

Once applied to the eyes, these shadows are pretty impressive. I've worn them for a couple of days now and they have never once creased or smudged. And you know how some shadows tend to blend into each other at the end of the day? These don't! They look practically the same after a few hours as when you applied them. Plus, they're pretty comfortable to wear - one of my beauty pet peeves is when eyeshadow flecks off into my eyes, but these shadows gave me no trouble at all!

Personally, I think it's fantastic that we now have a drugstore alternative for larger multi-colour palettes like the Urban Decay Naked or the Stila Eyes to the... palettes. The Nudes could definitely drop a couple of colours that aren't as strong as the others, but as a whole, I think it would be a great choice for beginners or those looking for a more affordable eyeshadow set.

You can get Maybelline's The Nudes palette at Priceline and other selected chemists for $24.95.

Have you got this palette? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. These look beautiful on you! This palette looks so sleek and oh the mattes! I love mattes! It's definitely rare to get such a good bargain in Australia but I think I'll be skipping out on this one. I've just got so many neutral eyeshadows already and none of the colours are particularly screaming at me

  2. It definitely seems like a great affordable alternative! I would buy it if only I didn't have too many other eyeshadows haha. I always buy new shadows but stick to the same ones! x
